(ST. LOUIS: Nov. 29, 2007) FKI Logistex® (www.fkilogistex.com), a global leader in integrated material handling solutions, has won a major contract with Innovative Cold Storage Enterprises, Inc. to provide a hybrid very-narrow-aisle (VNA) system for the company's 132,000-square-foot primary refrigerated warehouse facility in San Diego, Calif. The system features FKI Logistex Condor(TM) cranes and is the first VNA aisle-changing system commissioned by the third-party logistics and freezer storage company.
"Innovative Cold Storage is looking forward to working with FKI Logistex to meet the challenges facing the public cold storage industry," said Doug Gadker, general manager, Innovative Cold Storage. The new facility is being constructed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System(TM) specifications, the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. "We are aiming for a LEED Gold certification by enacting a number of green measures, including water-saving programs and an energy-efficient refrigeration system with extensive solar arrays," Gadker added.
The company will use six Condor cranes for pallet storage and retrieval in a 50-foot-high racking system. The warehouse includes a warm room within the high-bay freezer where technicians can comfortably perform maintenance on the cranes.
"The Condor VNA project is an important milestone for Innovative Cold Storage's business," said Ted Clucas, president, FKI Logistex Manufacturing Systems North America. "FKI Logistex has a history of success in providing VNA systems to third-party logistics and cold storage companies. We are excited to help Innovative Cold Storage increase throughput and efficiency as the company automates operations in the new, environmentally friendly facility."
The FKI Logistex system is scheduled to go live late in the summer of 2008.
FKI Logistex Condor Cranes
The FKI Logistex Condor high-bay VNA solution features hybrid cranes that store and retrieve pallet-size loads in very narrow aisles. Top-guidance and fully enclosed, heated cabins enable Innovative Cold Storage to achieve higher levels of throughput, accuracy and productivity in its freezer storage system. The all-electric Condor crane offers more uptime, fewer maintenance requirements and more efficient power usage than competing solutions. The Condor operation uses "in-aisle" conductor rail to electrify the AC-powered hoist and charge the on-board traction battery, eliminating the requirement for a battery changing or charging area and freeing up additional floor space for other purposes.
